60-Point Threshold in the Gendarmerie and Coast Guard
Official titleRegulation on the Proficiency Examination of the Gendarmerie and Coast Guard Academy
A new regulation defining the procedures and principles of the proficiency examination that officer and non-commissioned officer candidates at the Gendarmerie and Coast Guard Academy must take prior to graduation has been published.
Details of the Regulation
This new regulation published by the Ministry of Interior has clarified the rules of the proficiency examination to which officer and non-commissioned officer candidates who have completed basic law enforcement training within the Gendarmerie and Coast Guard Academy (JSGA) will be subjected. The examination will consist of three separate stages: oral (weighted 70%), sports (weighted 15%), and shooting (weighted 15%). In order for candidates to be considered successful in the examination, it is mandatory to score at least 60 points out of 100 total points.
In the implementation format of the examination, it has been specified that candidates who do not complete the sports and shooting tests will not be admitted to the oral examination. As for candidates who are exempted from the sports or shooting examination with a medical board report, their passing grades will be calculated based solely on the oral examination (100% if exempted from both) or over the remaining test weights according to their exemption status. Those who are not successful in the examination will not be appointed as officers or non-commissioned officers.
Candidates whose association is terminated due to failure in the examination may object in writing to the Academy Board of Directors within 7 days from the notification of the decision to them. While external source students who fail will have their association with the academy completely terminated, unit-sourced candidates (coming from within the profession) will be returned to their former units with their former ranks.
Questions You Might Have
- Do all efforts of candidates who fail the examination go to waste?
- Partially yes, they cannot become officers or non-commissioned officers, and if they are joining from an external source, their association with the academy is terminated. However, depending on their educational status, they can receive an associate degree or bachelor's degree diploma/certificate.
- Can a candidate with a medical report pass the examination without taking the sports or shooting test?
- Yes. They may be exempted by the decision of the board of directors in line with the medical board report. In this case, their passing scores are calculated solely on the basis of the oral examination weight (85% or 100%).
- How can a candidate eliminated as a result of the examination object to the decision?
- The scores given by the examination commission cannot be directly objected to. However, against the termination of association decision issued due to failure, there is a right to object in writing to the Academy Board of Directors within 7 days from notification.

REGAS Commentary
This regulation introduces a serious graduation-stage threshold examination standard to the gendarmerie and coast guard organization. Being successful in academic courses alone is no longer sufficient; candidates proving their physical qualifications (sports) and practical weapon skills (shooting) also becomes a legal requirement. In case of failure, external candidates losing all their rights aims to increase selectivity and quality standards in military personnel selection.
